This is a literature review of methodologies and technologies for the use of urban organic wastes to treat 65% of the waste generated by the population and reduce not only the volume of final disposal but to minimize environmental impacts that these residues generated as emissions of greenhouse gases causing global warming, pollution of soil, surface and ground water sources and the generation of offensive odors and proliferation of pathogens such as insects and rodents. Then we try here traditional techniques and increasingly technological and commercial development as anaerobic and aerobic composting, vermiculture and some alternative energy recovery as methanation or biogas, gasification, pyrolysis, plasma and incineration among others.
