Abstract
Landfills provide a technique for the effective
disposal and treatment of solid waste; they
generate leachates by means of the degradation of
organic matter and the percolation of rainwater. It
is possible to treat the sludge generated from the
treatment of leachates through a Discontinuous
Sequential Biological Reactor - SBBR, oxidizing
the substrate and favoring degradation and
nitrification. The objective of the study is the
biological treatment of leachate sludge from Doña
Juana Sanitary Landfill, Bogotá D.C - Colombia,
through an SBBR, to achieve the reduction of
environmental impacts. A pilot system was used,
with 10 mud replacements (one per week) in 70
days. The aeration system was controlled by
means of parameters such as pH, temperature and
dissolved oxygen that determined the correct
biological activity. A reduction of 40% of the total
nitrogen in the final sludge mixture was achieved. A
BOD reduction of 99.6% and a COD reduction of
98% for the final clarification were also obtained.
This allows us to conclude that, with the
incorporation of extended aeration, the biological process allows the mitigation of the contaminant
load.
