Abstract
Papillomaviruses are recognized as causal
agents of a variety of proliferative diseases in
many species. These viruses are high speciesspecific
and it is suggested that each animal
species harbor its own set of viruses. With the
discovery of specific papillomaviruses as primary
causes of cervical cancer, the study of this family
of viruses grow in the last 30 years, leading
to the expansion of research in veterinary
medicine. Papillomavirus-associated diseases in
horses include: classical papilomatosis, genital
papillomas/papilomatosis and aural plaques.
Despite the similarity in lesion, the course and
lesion distribution varies depending on the type
of virus involve.
