Resumen

Introduction: The environmental problems produced by the increase of solid wastes are due, partly, to a lack of education and environmental responsibility to separate them in the very source and use them again as raw material in the fabrication of new products. The Integral Management of Solid Waste (MIRS, in Spanish) contributes to the sustainable saving of natural resources. Objective: Evaluating the impact of the MIRS program in the Corporación Universitaria Lasallista. Methodology: The MIRS program was implemented and, later, the educational experiences and certain economic profits were evaluated. These profits include savings in the public cleanliness fees, the production of compost and the sale of recycling materials. Results: In 5 semesters developing the program $18´ 114.772 Colombian Pesos were saved in cleanliness fees, diminishing the the volume of waste for their final disposal. Other benefits included the production of compost and the sale of recycling materials. Conclusions: Implementing MIRS has been an excellent experience, due to the environmental education campaign in which all of the academic members have been involved, A special commitment has been kept by our students and faculty members from the SISMO Young Researchers Group and the General Services staff from Corporación Universitaria Lasallista.
