Desarrollo Embrionario del Capaz Pimelodus grosskopfii (Steindachner, 1879)
(2012) Valbuena Villarreal, Rubén D.; Zapata Berruecos, Beatriz E.; David Ruales, Carlos Arturo; Cruz Casallas, Pablo Emilio
The knowledge of embryonic development in fish is important in native species with potential for fish farming, by virtue of which it makes possible to identify morphological and chronological events to establish management practices during incubation periods and larviculture. The capaz (Pimelodus grosskopfii) is a species with potential for commercial crop, due to their omnivorous eating habits and acceptance of its meat in the market. To study the embryonic development of the species, sexually mature adult specimens were induced to reproduce with carp pituitary extract (5.75 and 4.0 mgKg-1, females and males, respectively). The inseminated oocytes were incubated in an upward flow system 30 a 27 ± 1 ° C. The samples (n = 30) were collected at the same time of the extrusion, during fertilization, and every 15 minutes starting from 0 to 2 hours post fertilization (HPF) and every 30 minutes from 0 to 2 HPF, and every 30 minutes from 2 to 5 HPF; finally, between 5 HPF and hatching every 60 minutes. The fertilized oocytes had a spherical shape without adhesions and large perivitelline space. Embryonic development took 12 HPF. The differentiation in animal and vegetal pole occurred at 0.2 HPF, the first cleavage at 0.3 HPF, stratified and high blastodisc at 1.8 HPF, flattened blastodisc at 3.3 HPF, the epiboly <50% was observed at 4 HPF, the closure of the blastopore at 5.7 HPF, cranial-caudal differentiation and starting the neurolation at 7 HPF, the differentiation of the optic vesicles, otic and Kupffer's vesicle at 8.5 HPF, tail of the vitelum was released at 10 HPF, first movements were observed at 10.5 and finally hatching occurred at 12 HPF. When the larvae hatched, they showed a total length of 2987±67 µm, without depigmentation, rudimentary digestive system without oral and anal opening and the presence of chromatophores on the yolk sac.

(2012) Restrepo Botero, Juan Carlos; Ortiz Escobar, Claudia Patricia; Ochoa Uribe, Ana Marcela
The Lasallian District of Medellin, Colom-bia requested Corporación Universitaria Lasallista to analyze the formation pro-cess received by postulants to De La Salle Brothers in Istmina, Colombia, from 2002 to 2010. Academic, religious, pedagogical, apostolic and personal formation experien-ces received there were analyzed in this case study –from a qualitative approach– by means of semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Personal and apostolic formations stand out among the results due to the characteristics of Istmina as a proper place for sensibilization and subjugation in proof of vocation. However, the reach of integral formation is questioned because academic formation presented meaningful deficiencies. In conclusion, even though formation experiences in vulnerable con-texts are appreciated –and contextualiza-tion of learning is deemed meaningful–, participants agree in the necessity of deve-loping strong competences to face educa-tional and apostolic practices.

This study is within the field of educational psychology, from a cognitive approach, it is aimed to describe the early maladaptive schemes (EMS) being present in tenth and eleven grade students, who once had been under the disciplinary pedagogical contract at the educational institute José María Bernal (JOMABER) of Caldas, Antioquia-Colombia. This research is quantitative-type, with a descriptive method, and pretends to understand, describe, and evaluate the EMTs occurring in this students. This sample is composed by 52 students currently in tenth and eleventh grade, who are registered in pedagogical processes or disciplinary contracts, and whose ages range from 15 to 18. The questionnaire of Young Schemas, YSQ - L2, authorized by the University of San Buenaventura of Medellin (Colombia), was applied on these students. The results show that it is probable that the behaviors and problems of these teenagers may be related to early maladaptive schemes, such as vulnerability to harm and sickness, and rights/grandiosity, whose origin associates with the bringing-up styles being overprotective or permissive and indulgent. This results show failure in the management of authority, and in the establishment of well-defined standards and limits.

Pharmaceutical products in the environment: sources, effects and risks
(2012) Jiménez Cartagena, Claudio; Narvaez, John F.
Pharmaceuticals and personal care products have become an environmental problem in recent years. Their physicochemical properties and persistence in the environment have allowed the distribution of degradates and parent compounds in water, soil, air and food. The widespread use of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in hospitals, domestic residences, agricultural and industrial facilities has increased their discharge into the water bodies, and its toxicity has started to manifest in different biological components of ecosystems. The development of methods for sample treatment and instrumental analysis techniques has enabled the separation, identification and quantification of active ingredients and degradates with higher environmental impact, at concentrations of parts per billion or even parts per trillion. In addition, in vitro and in vivo assays have demonstrated their ecotoxicity in water, driving them to the classification of emerging organic pollutants, whose waste is indeterminate. Although their adverse effects are still unknown, they could have strong implications for global public health. This review presents the dynamics and the development of research over the past ten years about the presence of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesics, antihypertensives, antibiotics and other drugs in water bodies. Similarly, it described the impact of pharmaceutical activity, hospital services and domestic effluents on water quality.

The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) through bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in a group of twenty Colombian native hor -ses with respiratory symptoms. Each animal underwent a clinical examination in order to corroborate the respiratory disturbance and later perform the BAL. The results obtained showed that 65% of the animals under study tested positive for RAO, based on the clinical and BAL results, and that, among the total number of animals that tested positive, 61.5% su -ffered a severe form of such condition. We also found an association between the number of neutrophils and the color of the BAL fluid, and an inverse relationship between cell cytology of macrophages and neutrophils. It is concluded that the Colombian native horse, like other horse breeds, suffers from RAO, sometimes severely, related to predisposing factors such as accommodation and stabling.

Educación artística: práctica democrática e inserción curricular
    (2014-04-04) Alvarado Sánchez, Jairo Augusto
Artistic education plays a key role in the school learning processes and allows, through an aesthetic experience, the approximation of all the education aims: access to the cultural world. The validity and scope of this education have been studied from two aspects: the public policy agenda at contnental level and the curriculum development moments of artistic education. Results have shown that the artistic impact in education goes beyond establishing or regulating the teaching of a knowledge area or field since the question does not rely only a pedagogic challenge for the school or for the teacher, but on a collective challenge in which the whole society is involved. At the same time, aesthetic education contributes to individual and social development from a democratic perspective based on the recognition and legitimacy of the other.

Virtue according to Aristotle’s thought is a medium term with regard to us regula-ted by right reason, as a prudent man. would act. It is that mode of being by which man becomes good and through which he performs his function very well. Virtue is directly related to how people act; these steps or actions should lead to a good, and that good must be a generator of happiness in man. It depends just on man himself that the actions he performs are done well and according to virtue. Thus, it is expected that the scientist who experiments with animals to act according to virtue, to have a permanent disposition to work according to right reason, and to discuss what is good, particularly what does good especially to other forms of life which share with us the mystery of life. The Aristotelian virtuous man must search that his actions are mediated by reason to choose what is good , not for himself but for the common good.

Aristotelian wisdom is understood as the intellectual virtue that, as it is simultaneously science and intellect, acknowledges the principles and the causes of the things that must be useful for oneself. Therefore for Aristotle a wise person is the one who knows everything as much as possible, possessing the science of the universe in a maximum degree. Aristotle tells us about the way we must interpret prudence and wisdom, by saying that they are both different, but mutually complementary. This reflection, in short, is the one approached by this article, by going into detail about the theory of the Aristotelian virtues and the "supreme" virtue among them, which is wisdom (as it is regarded by Aristotle) and its influence on researchers that conduct experiments on animals, given the fact that those researchers must observe universal ethical principles to develop their research works.

The purpose of this study is to explore and describe the personal, academic, institutional and socioeconomic risk factors associated with student dropout at Lasallista University Institution. The sample consisted of 281 students enrolled in different programs offered by the University in 2010 and 31 students who had dropped out in 2009. Two scales were constructed asking for factors that could affect academic dropouts and for students who had interrupted their studies at university. The descriptive analysis used involved performing the frequency distribution and obtaining measures of central tendency to find factors related to desertion according to participant’s opinion. The results showed that risk factors for academic dropping out are predominantly socioeconomic, then we found institutional factors and having the lower percentages distributions were academic and personal factors.

According to Foucault’s thought, self care is ethical by definition and involves the relationships with others, because self care enables people to be an occupant of the city, a community member or to have inter-individual relationships, in a convenient position. The problem of the relationship with others is present throughout the development of self care. From this base, and also from biopolitics, this paper reflects to build guiding principles for care bioethics, with Foucault’s thought. Even though there are no evidences to say that Foucault spoke about bioethics, his reflections about biopolitics get in the bioethics area and provide elements concerning this discipline, regarded by many authors as recent and yet to be built. The relationship between bioethics and biopolitics, implicitly given by Foucault, is shown in this reflection.

Objective. To determine the frequency of gastrointestinal nematode infection in goat and sheep folds of some municipalities of Antioquia. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out between February and June 2011 in fecal samples of 84 goats and 11 sheep between 2 and 132 months of age in six folds in Antioquia. The number of eggs per gram of feces (epg) was determined using the McMaster technique, and the 3rd larval stage was obtained by means of Corticelli and Lai technique. For larval gender identification, gastrointestinal nematode taxonomical keys for goats and sheep were used. Tricostrongilides infection frequency and its association with epidemiological data was measured by means of chi-square test and comparison of proportions by column with Z test and U of Mann-Whitney contrast test. Results. Nematode infection frequency was 86.6% and Haemonchus contortus (66.3%), Oesophagostomum spp (38.9%), Trichostrongylus spp (34.7%) and Ostertagia spp. (24.2%) were the most prevalent nematodes. A statistically significant difference was found between infected and non-infected proportion per animal breed. Conclusions. There are differences between infection frequencies in Camuro, La mancha and Toggenburg breeds compared with other breeds in the same folds. These differences can be related with resistance and/ or recovering from infection, but more research focused in mechanisms of action in goats and sheep of Antioquia is necessary.

It will always be important to reflect about the intellectual virtue of téchne as the rational arrangement that allows us doing things with the assistance of real reasoning. Aristotle defines téchne as the art of being productive with the company of real reasoning. Therefore, reasoning is not a "doing something", but a "know how". Our concern in this reflection is to understand this intellectual habit, its relationship with modern technique and its application by the scientists that use animals for experiments. This professional exercise (téchne) is an art that can transmit emotions, sensations and which constitutes and awakening for the inner magic inside the scientist. Thus results in scientific actions being mediated by upright reasoning and by scientist´s capability to avoid doing harm to other living beings.

(2014-04-04) Posada Arias, Silvia; García Naranjo, Ricardo; Saldarriaga Restrepo, Alejandro
The purpose of the study is to describe hematological variables before and after exercise in dogs that do agility, and the effect of factors such as gender and age on these parameters. Forty dogs were sampled during 2012, regardless of gender and age, with at least six months of practice in Antioquia. Samples of venous blood were taken at three points: at rest, immediately after exercising and 30 minutes after exercising. In Statgraphics version 15.0, analysis of variance was used with three factors (sex, age, and time of sampling) to evaluate its effect on red and white blood cells and platelets. The confidence level was 95 %, and the multiple comparisons procedure (least significant difference) was used. Erythrocytes and the mean corpuscular volume show significant differences (p <0.05) for each of the interactions (sex and age in each of the three times). Hemoglobin did not show significant differences in any of the factors and interactions evaluated. The leukocyte count showed significant differences at different ages (p <0.05). Neutrophils and lymphocytes showed significant differences between the different age groups (p <0.05) and eosinophils showed no significant differences for the variables of the study. Post-exercise hematologic variations are due to sympathetic predominance and release of catecholamines, which stimulate splenocontraction and release of erythrocytes from the spleen. In white blood cells, epinephrine release in response to fear, excitement or sudden exercise is responsible for physiological leukocytosis and neutrophilia.
