Abstract
Neospora caninum is a forced intracellular protozoa belonging to the phylum apicomplexa, a causal agent for neosporosis, a disease responsible for reproductive changes such as abortions, mummified fetuses and embryonic reabsorptions, with an advance level of autolysis. The disease has been reported in various parts of Colombia since the year 2000, and its economic impact although not estimated, is well-known.
An epidemiological study was carried out with 999 female cattle, predominantly of the Holstein breed, of which the disease diagnosis was carried out on only 741 female cattle, in San Pedro de los Milagros in the department of Antioquia. Whole blood samples were taken for serological evaluation by way of indirect ELISA, taking into account positive tests those of which had an optical density (OD) ≥ 0.6 and negative OD < 0.45. The apparent found prevalence was 32.7% (243/741) and the real prevalence was 69.5%, taking into account a “89% sensitivity and a 97% specificity of the diagnostic test used.” (Alvarez Garcia, and others, 2013).
In addition, significant associations were found between the positive diagnostic results and the variable age group and the variable village origin (p<0.05), while there was not a significant association between the positive diagnostic results and the variable number of births (p>0.05).
The diagnostic criteria used, as well as the diagnostic information analysis generated in other studies, allow for the confirmation of the presence, circulation and maintenance of Neospora caninum in the herd with an apparent number of infected animals.
