Abstract
InthisarticleIpresentapossiblepolysemythatcanbeobservedamongthedefendersofscientificnaturalism,foralthoughphilosopherssuchasQuine,Dennett,andGieresharetheoriginalspiritofnaturalizedepistemologyunderthedefinitionIwillcall(D1):the success of epistemology depends on how its problems can be reduced or replaced by science,thetreatmentthateachofthesephilosophersoffersofnaturalizedepistemologydepartsfromthisprimitivedefinition,sinceeachoneprivilegescertainapproachesthatwouldnotbeacceptabletoothers,norarethoseapproachesadjustedinthesamewaytowhatD1posits.So,althoughthethreeacceptthethesisthatthenewepistemologymustexcludethemetaphysicaldiscoursethathasdominatedtraditionalepistemologyandsubstituteitforpurelyscientificprojects,thetreatmentthateachoneseparatelygivestothisthesishasimplicationsthatothersupportersofnaturalismwouldfinditindefensible.
