Abstract

Introduction: Total digestibility can be evaluated by the use of direct and indirect methods. The results, it is supposed should be identical, under normal physiological conditions, for digestibility studies in pigs. The literature available, nevertheless, reports lower digestibility coefficients for the indirect method. Objective: To compare different collection methods for the total digestibility (TD) of extruded soybean protein in pigs. Materials and methods: The field work was developed at San Pablo Center, in Universidad Nacional de Colombia. 18 pigs with a live weight of 35.5kg were used. They were housed in independent cages and their experimental diet contained extruded soybean as protein source, and also met all of the minimal nutrition requirements. The experimental work consisted in five days of adaptation to the experimental diet and 10 days of collecting the feces and nylon bags. The experimental treatments were: Total collection of feces (TCF), mobile nylon bag technique (MNBT). Method of the indicator: Chromium oxide (MI1) and ferric oxide (MI2). The data of rough protein disappearance were analyzed with a statistic design of random blocks, by the use of the GLM procedure of the SAS statistic package (2006). Results: Statistic differences (P<0.01) appeared between treatments, in which TCF and MNBT had the highest digestibility coefficients. There was no statistic difference (P>0.01) between MI1 and MI2. Conclusions: TCF and MNBT are practical and reliable procedures in nutritional valuing studies for the food used in growing pigs.
