Abstract
Introduction. From a linguistic analysis of texts, this
article treats several consideration and analyzes
about intertextuality. Objective: Describe the kinds
of quotes, their communicative functions and the
verbs used to report in five scientific articles about
social and human sciences, published on an indexed
magazine, and using the Swales moves. Materials
and methods. The methodology used is qualitative,
based on textual linguistics, the especialized speech
and science rhetorics. Results. The results show
that most of the quotes in the corpus analyzed
are indirect. This could be an indicator of the fact
that writers, concerning intertextuality, focus on the
interpretative work of paraphrasing, the abstract and
the generalization, instead of literal transposition or
direct quoting. As for the verbs used to report, speech
verbs are more recurrent (69 %) in comparison to
research vebs (28 %) and coginitive verbs (3 %).
Conclusions. It can be said that quoting not only is
including a text about the prior knowledge of other
texts based on bibliographical rules, but a central
characteristic of science. This practice, anyway, is
not a guarantee of scientific value, as it is a rhetorical
strategy used to guide and to achieve the objective
of the author´s speech.
