Resumen
This article describes the importance and application of the air quality index (AQI) for the Aburrá
valley, used by the Air Quality Monitoring Network. This organization works on defining effective
tools to make choices concerning the atmospheric contamination rates generated in its influence
area. The methodology used by the United States Environmental Protection Agency was taken and
adapted, given the fact that they have developed several versions of AQI for different applications.
The importance of developing and applying AQI is evident when the effects of contaminants and
concentrations generated by economic and social developments in a region are accounted.
