Abstract
Abstract Introduction. A research work sponsored by the Asociación Colombiana de Facultades de Administración has been recently finished. It was made by an interdisciplinary group conformed by researchers from several Colombian universities and was named “Research on management in Colombia. Conditions for the generation, the knowledge, the researchers, the institutionalization and the scientific production”, and it has been able to impact research guilds under scientific knowledge about management terms. The results of this research work can neither be taken as an epistemological compendium of social sciences, or as a specific abstract of the management practice. Its relevance lays on several aspects that cover several aspects, including the typing of researchers according to the kinds of knowledge related to the subject and a questioning of the very existence of a scientific statute for management. A research process demands two subjects to generate knowledge: A subject that assumes the character of object, which can be studied, and another subject intended and able to study the object, with a great accumulation of realities, imaginary and imprecise contents, giving the research a personal dynamism. These two subjects act within an environment that accelerate or decelerate the intention and, furthermore, refute or validate any research effort. Objective. To characterize the current status of management research in Colombian universities. Materials and methods. The issue was approached from two perspectives: The first was focused on the comprehension of the problem, trying to answer a first question related to the thought and the motivations for the investigative action assumed by researchers and the second was focused on the description of the situation studied,, trying to answer questions such as: What are the epistemological, ontological, praxeological, ethical and methodological conceptions of the researchers who work in the management schools? How is the development of policies and the status of the scientific and technological infrastructures determined? And what is the academic production that results from the research processes? Results. The research work was useful to characterize several topics that intervene on the knowledge generation processes that take place at management schools, making possible the following classifications within those processes: The presence of a great dependence between the generation of knowledge and aspects related to the country´s social problems and economic development. It could be also concluded that the generation of knowledge about management issues, as in any other discipline, is based on research works structured from epistemological, ontological, praxeological, methodological, ethical and axiological aspects, and also on the scientific and social legitimacy. Another characterization of researchers could be made, based on their particularities and the environments in which they develop their activities. Finally, among the most relevant results, those related to an informative intention, those that try to respond to the social reality of the country and those that are focused on solving organizational or corporative problems in the regions are remarked. Conclusion. It is expected that the results obtained from this research work are useful for administration schools because it provides information for making choices related to the topics that can be researched. It is also expected that those results are useful for researchers and academics, because the results will allow them to know the current reality of their line of work and the re-orientation of their research activities. Finally, it is expected to be useful for policy makers such as the National Education Ministry, ICFES and COLCIENCIAS, given the description of the current status of the discipline.
